FOOD WASTE TO GO – THE DIGITAL SOLUTION

After a long struggle to find viable solutions to eradicate food waste, we are now giving it away at cost via the Too Good to Go app – ‘the world’s largest marketplace for surplus food.’
The Too Good to Go platform helps us tackle an industry-wide problem (across the board, around 12% of all food waste comes from hospitality). At conferences, for example, we feel obliged to over cater by as much as 20% in case the numbers go up; we don’t always know how many of our clients are vegetarians or whether everyone will turn up. We looked at donating, but charities don’t want our leftovers unless we can guarantee a certain quantity every day (we don’t run conferences every day).
Created by a B Corp, social impact organisation founded in Denmark, Too Good to Go provides us with a creative platform for managing and distributing all that surplus food. Those who sign up to the app (around 100 million across 19 countries) are offered a chance to order unsold or un-eaten food from local restaurants, cafes and caterers like us, packed for collection, at bargain prices.
As a participant, Mayfair Catering is now one of 175,000 business partners helping to save good food from going to waste. While any profit goes to our staff, the scheme offers consumers a low-impact way of enjoying a low-cost meal (we charge £3.90 each).
